Intentionality of Feng Shui
Incorporating feng shui into your interior designs helps create spaces with intention. The practice of integrating feng shui into your spaces aims to create balance in your home and overall life. Feng shui is the Chinese art of placement. It’s founded on the belief that everything in our environment affects our energy. So with a bit of intentionality you can truly design and curate a space to be harmonious and balanced.
When designing our nursery it was important to me to create a serene and nurturing space for all the obvious reasons. In doing so, I adhered to some basic feng shui principles in both my overall design and finishes selections. I placed the crib and rocking chair in commanding positions of the room. In other words, you should be able to see the door from where you are sitting or laying. I created a sense of balance with a mix of dark and light colors and a mix of hard and soft furnishings. I used a dark blue, Farrow & Ball’s Downpipe, on the walls paired with Rifle & Co.’s Fable Wallpaper in their soft Linen color. There is no right answer to which colors to paint a room but if you are looking to create a certain type of energy you can select a corresponding color. The color blue promotes relaxation and calmness so I knew F&B’s Downpipe was the choice for us. Lastly, I invested in comfortable furniture and a lot of natural textures that are not only appealing to the eye, but promote restorative and peaceful energy. A mix of wood, stone, metal and soft fabrics such as cotton, velvet and linen in tones found in nature, together achieved the variation and grounding elements I was looking for in the nursery. And one final principle that I integrated into my design and still put into practice today is the notion of designing and keeping a clutter-free space. I kept this in mind when selecting furniture and it’s placement in the nursery and make this a weekly ritual to ensure Crew’s space never feels cluttered by laundry, outgrown clothes or toys, etc.
